How to use it

  1. Find a capitalType a country or a city in the search: it looks at both, in English and in the page’s language, and ignores accents. Pick a continent, sort A–Z by country or by capital, and print the list on A4.
  2. Take the quizChoose country → capital or capital → country, type the answer or pick one of four from the same continent, and play 10, 20 or all. Small typos are forgiven, and a first-letter hint helps when you are stuck.
  3. Keep what you learnAfter every answer you see the flag and, where a capital is not simple, a short note. Repeat your mistakes in one tap, or use the flashcards: a card you knew comes back later, a card you missed comes back soon.

How the list is built

The list has 195 countries: the 193 member states of the United Nations and the two observer states, the Holy See (Vatican City) and the State of Palestine. Capitals and country codes come from Wikidata and were checked by hand; the country names follow the Unicode CLDR in each language. Where a country splits the work of its capital or the capital is disputed, as in South Africa, Bolivia, the Netherlands or Jerusalem, a note under the capital explains it, and the quiz accepts the alternative answers the list records, such as La Paz for Bolivia or Cape Town for South Africa.

Continents follow the UN M49 regions, with the Americas divided into North America (including Central America and the Caribbean) and South America. A country that spans two continents is listed once: Russia in Europe; Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia in Asia; Egypt in Africa. Under M49, Cyprus and Armenia are in Asia too.

Questions

How many countries and capitals are there?

This list has 195: the 193 UN member states plus the Holy See and the State of Palestine, the two UN observer states. Some lists show more because they add territories such as Greenland or Puerto Rico, or places with limited recognition such as Kosovo or Taiwan; those are not counted here.

Which countries have more than one capital?

South Africa has three: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Bolivia’s constitutional capital is Sucre, while the government sits in La Paz. The Netherlands’ capital is Amsterdam, but the government is in The Hague; Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Eswatini and Tanzania split the roles too. Open the note under a capital to read the details.

How does the quiz check what I type?

Capital letters, accents, hyphens, apostrophes and articles do not matter, so “sao tome” and “São Tomé” are the same answer. Listed alternatives count too, such as Kiev for Kyiv. A small typo is forgiven — one in a name of five letters or more, two from ten — unless what you typed is another country’s answer, and the right spelling is shown.

How do the flashcards work?

They use a Leitner system with five boxes. A card you knew moves up one box; a card you missed goes back to box 1. Cards in the low boxes return after a few others, cards in box 5 only after many, so your time goes to the capitals you do not know yet. Your boxes and best quiz results stay in this browser only, with no account.
