How to read the table

  1. Number and symbolThe atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus. The symbol is one or two Latin letters, the first always a capital.
  2. Periods and groupsRows are periods: the period number equals the number of electron shells. Columns are groups: elements in one group behave alike.
  3. ColoursThe colour shows the element's group: alkali metals, halogens, noble gases and others. Switch the colouring to see states or properties.

Questions

How many elements are in the periodic table?

118. The last one, oganesson, was discovered in 2006; all 118 have approved names.

Where does the data come from?

Element properties come from PubChem's periodic table (the US National Center for Biotechnology Information); names in four languages come from Wikidata.

Why do some elements have no melting point?

The heaviest elements are made in laboratories a few atoms at a time and last fractions of a second, so many of their properties have never been measured.

Can I use the table in class?

Yes, free and without sign-up. Show it on a projector, or open it in VITON13 LAB next to the chemistry lab.
