While the timer runs, the page asks the browser to keep the screen on, where supported.

Your settings are kept in this browser only.

How to use it

  1. Set the timeTap a preset from 1 to 45 minutes or type hours, minutes and seconds. Pomodoro and Intervals have their own settings.
  2. Start and adjustStart or Space begins and pauses, +1 min adds time while it runs, R resets. The tab title shows the time left.
  3. Show the classFull screen (F) keeps only the time and the buttons, on white or dark. A soft chime sounds at the end.

How it keeps time

The timer does not count ticks. When you press Start it notes a reading of the browser’s monotonic clock, performance.now(), and every time it draws it works out the time left from the difference. A slow page, a hidden tab or a busy computer can delay the drawing, but not the time itself.

The chimes are synthesised by the Web Audio API in your browser: no sound files are downloaded. They are scheduled ahead on the audio clock, so the end signal does not wait for the page to be drawn again.

Your last settings — the time, the mode, the Pomodoro and interval lengths, the volume and the screen theme — are kept in this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions

Does the timer keep running in another tab?

Yes. The time left is calculated from the clock, not counted tick by tick, so switching to another tab or window does not slow it down, and the digits are right as soon as you come back. The chime is scheduled ahead, so most browsers play it on time even in a background tab. A computer going to sleep or a phone locking its screen can pause the page, so keep the screen on during a lesson.

How loud is the chime and can I change it?

It is a soft bell of three notes, played twice when the time is up. Set the level with the volume slider, turn the sound off, or press “Test sound” before the lesson. The real loudness also depends on your device’s volume. Pomodoro and Intervals use a different short signal for each phase, and Intervals can beep in the last three seconds of a phase.

How do I use it in class?

Tap a preset or type the time, then press F for full screen on the projector and choose white or dark. Space starts and pauses, R resets, +1 min gives the class more time without stopping. While it runs, the time left is in the tab title, the page shows the clock time when it ends, and it asks the browser to keep the screen on where that is supported.

What are the Pomodoro and Intervals modes?

Pomodoro follows the time-management method devised by Francesco Cirillo: 25 minutes of focus, a 5-minute break and a longer break after every four sessions; all three lengths can be changed and a counter shows the sessions done. Intervals runs rounds of work and rest with an optional “get ready” phase, for example 30 seconds of work and 15 of rest, eight times, for a PE circuit.
