Online stopwatch
Big digits to the hundredth, laps with the fastest and slowest marked, and a full screen for the gym or the lab. It stays exact in a background tab.

Laps
Laps: 0Press Lap or L to record a lap.
While the stopwatch runs, the page asks the browser to keep the screen on, where supported.
Laps stay until reset or reload; the screen theme is kept in this browser.
How to use it
- StartPress Start or Space. The digits show minutes, seconds and hundredths, and hours once the hour is passed.
- Record lapsPress Lap or L for each lap or each finisher: every row shows the lap time and the total, fastest in green, slowest in red.
- Stop and keep the timesStop with Space, then copy the laps or download them as a CSV file for a spreadsheet. R resets after a stop.
How it measures time
The stopwatch does not count ticks. Start notes a reading of the browser’s monotonic high-resolution clock, performance.now(), and every reading you see is the difference from it. The screen redraws many times a second, but a late frame or a hidden tab changes nothing in the time.
Browsers deliberately make this clock slightly coarser for privacy, to about a millisecond or finer, which is still well below the hundredth of a second shown. In practice the larger error is the moment the button is pressed by a person.
Laps stay on this page until you reset or reload it; only the screen theme is kept in this browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Questions
Does the stopwatch keep running in another tab?
Yes. The time is calculated from the clock each time it is shown, so a hidden tab or a minimised window does not slow it down: when you come back, the digits are right at once. A computer going to sleep or a phone locking its screen can pause the page, so keep the screen on while timing. While the stopwatch runs, the page asks the browser to keep the screen on where that is supported.
How accurate is it?
The reading is shown to the hundredth of a second and is the difference between two readings of the browser’s high-resolution clock, so it does not drift with the screen’s refresh rate. Browsers round that clock slightly for privacy, to about a millisecond or finer. The biggest uncertainty is human: the moment someone presses the button or a key.
How do I record laps and save them?
Press Lap or L. Each row shows the lap number, the lap time and the total time, newest on top; once there are two different laps, the fastest is green and the slowest red. “Copy laps” puts them on the clipboard as text, and “Download CSV” saves a table for a spreadsheet, with semicolons in the Russian, Spanish and French editions. Laps disappear on reset or reload.
How do I use it in PE or a science lesson?
Press F for full screen on the projector and choose white or dark. Space starts and stops, L records a lap, R resets after a stop. To time a race, start once and press L as each runner finishes: the total in each row is that runner’s time. In an experiment, a lap marks each reading, such as a pendulum swing or a falling object.
