How to learn touch typing
- Place your handsIndex fingers on F and J, the other fingers along the home row, thumbs over the space bar.
- Stop looking at the keysFind each key by touch. Your speed drops for the first days; that is your hands relearning.
- Go row by rowHome row first, then the top and bottom rows, then words and sentences — the order of the eight lessons.
- Practise briefly, every dayFifteen to twenty minutes a day works better than rare long sessions.
- Measure your speedTake the one-minute typing speed test once a week and compare.
Which finger types which key
In ten-finger typing each finger owns a column. The little fingers keep the edges and Shift, the ring and middle fingers the next columns, the index fingers two columns each in the centre, and the thumbs press the space bar. Capitals use the Shift key under the other hand.
How typing speed is measured
The trainer divides the correctly typed characters, spaces included, by the minutes: characters per minute. Words per minute follow the standard rule of one word per five characters. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes without an error.
Questions
How long does it take to learn touch typing?
Usually a few weeks of regular 15–20 minute sessions. Speed drops at first because you stop looking at the keys, then it climbs past your old speed.
Do I need an account?
No. The trainer is free and works without signing in; your best results and passed lessons are saved in your browser.
Which keyboard layouts are included?
English and Spanish QWERTY, French AZERTY and Russian ЙЦУКЕН. Switch the layout above the text.
Can I practise on a phone?
You can test your speed on a phone, but ten-finger touch typing is practised on a physical keyboard.
What if the trainer ignores my keys?
Click the text and check your keyboard layout: if another one is on, the trainer tells you which to switch to.
