On 24 September 2026, Google Search Central recorded a change to its VideoObject documentation: it added the creator property, noted support for author and clarified supported interaction types. For educational video publishers, the change is a reason to check whether metadata accurately describes the lesson and its creator.

  • The verified change concerns documentation and supported properties; it does not promise a ranking increase.
  • Creator details and interaction counts should describe real, traceable information about the video.

What changed in the documentation

Google’s update log names creator and interactionStatistic as the affected parts of VideoObject guidance. The current documentation identifies creator or author as a person or organisation that created or published the video. This gives a publisher a clearer description to work from. It is a documentation update, not an instruction to invent an author or add numbers merely to fill a field.

Match the metadata to the actual lesson

Our editorial suggestion is to list the lesson title, subject, creator and playable resource beside the structured data. Check whether each value refers to that video, rather than a generic course homepage. A title that promises a worked example should correspond to a lesson that contains one. The viewer’s ability to find and understand the content remains part of the publishing task.

Keep measurements separate from learning claims

A count of interactions is not evidence that viewers understood the lesson. Record the measurement source and definition before publishing a number, and omit unsupported figures. If you want to evaluate learning, use a separate task where a learner applies the idea and explains the result. These are our editorial assessment suggestions; the Google update concerns describing videos for Search, not assessing students.

Check the page you actually publish

Inspect the public page and its video, then review the structured data against the current official guidance. Correct inaccurate values before considering a larger content rollout. Valid markup helps describe a page but does not guarantee a special display, indexing or rank. For a learning exercise, one accurate, accessible lesson page is more useful than copying metadata across several videos without checking their differences.

Try the idea

Choose one educational video you publish or are allowed to inspect. Make a small table of its visible title, subject, creator and video location. Compare that record with the page’s structured data and identify one unsupported or mismatched value.

Questions and answers

Does adding creator guarantee better Google rankings?

No. The update documents supported metadata. Search appearance and ranking are not guaranteed by adding a property.

Can I use an estimated count as a verified interaction total?

Keep estimates labelled and separate from actual measurements. Do not publish an unsupported number as though it came from the video’s measured interactions.
